Why?

We know that young people are more likely to be diagnosed late with breast cancer, and their treatment responses and outcomes are worse than for people of screening age. We can’t keep leaving younger people behind.

• Cancers in young adults (under 50) rose by 79% between 1990 and 2019
• Under-50s are twice as likely to be diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer than someone in their 60s, with under-25s three times as likely to be diagnosed late
• A 25 year-old woman diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer has a quarter of the chance of surviving 15 years post-surgery, than a 65 year-old woman with the same diagnosis

Yet breast cancer is still widely perceived as an “older person’s disease”. People below screening age are often unaware of symptoms, dismissed by healthcare professionals, and excluded from research. This must change.

This conference will mark the launch of a flagship publication examining the current state of breast cancer in younger people and identifying priority areas for action. It will be a solutions-focused day, bringing together experts to explore how policy and practice can evolve to improve outcomes for younger people with breast cancer.
