Just like baking a cake or brewing the perfect cuppa, chest-checking is something we can learn, share and pass on to loved ones.

This Mother’s Day, Asda Tickled Pink is sharing what we think is the most important recipe of all, a simple four steps for checking your chest.

Following the guide will mean you’re one step closer to knowing your normal, and noticing if anything is new and unusual for you. Remember – early detection can save lives. By checking your chest every month, it’ll be easier to notice any unusual changes.

We’re incredibly grateful to Asda Tickled Pink for being committed to helping us share the chest-checking message, and to our fab community – which includes Dhvani, one of our storytellers. Dhvani was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 19, so she understands more than most just how important knowing your normal can be. You can hear more about her story below.

“I didn’t know breast cancer could happen to someone at such a young age. So when I first felt a lump at 19, I was so scared. And when I was told I had breast cancer, the whole room went silent – it felt surreal. I didn’t understand, why me? My parents supported me at appointments, but when I’d go to the breast clinic with my mum, they’d be shocked when they called my name and I stood up. It felt so isolating to be so young, everyone else at the hospital was 35-40. It felt like no one understood what I was going through.

Before breast cancer, I was very shy. I didn’t like stepping out of my comfort zone, but cancer forced me to. If you think there’s something to fight for, you fight for it. And since my diagnosis, I’ve been bolder. I’ve become more of an extrovert. If I could go back in time, I’d tell my pre-breast cancer self to do the things I was scared of, stop being shy and be confident.”

Just as important messages like chest-checking should be shared, so should family favourites. Why not try Dhvani’s family Masala Chai this Mother’s Day, and use the moment to pass on the habit of chest-checking? Conversations about our health can start anywhere, even over a cup of Chai…
